The 2016–2017 collaboration between SFEMS and the California Jazz Conservatory continues on Sunday, February 19, with the return of Laudami, in a program of Italian and Italianate baroque music. Experience the wildly dazzling improvisational displays of baroque Italy, and see how they influenced the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Violinist Laura Rubinstein-Salzedo and harpsichordist Michael Peterson join forces to showcase masters of the Italian style. After journeying through works from seventeenth-century Italy and Germany—including sonatas by Corelli, Fontana, and Vivaldi, and a solo harpsichord work by Handel—they will conclude with one of Bach’s finest violin sonatas.
The Laudami Ensemble, a period instrument ensemble based in the San Francisco Bay Area, “impressed listeners with a careful use of dynamics and variety of bowing techniques” (Early Music America). Its core members consist of Laura Rubinstein-Salzedo, baroque violin, David Ross, baroque flute, and Michael Peterson, harpsichord. The ensemble’s name was formed by taking the first letters of each artist’s name, Lau-da-mi. In January 2014 Laudami presented a program of solo and trio sonatas by the Bach family, and this past June, they gave a fringe concert of French and Italian Styles at the Berkeley Early Music Festival.
The concert takes place at the California Jazz Conservatory, 2087 Addison St between Shattuck and Milvia in downtown Berkeley. The venue is one block from downtown Berkeley BART and parking is easily available at the Addison St parking garage. Sunday street parking is free and also relatively easy on a Sunday afternoon. CJC offers a casual and intimate environment where the audience can enjoy a light meal and sip a glass of wine or a cup of coffee while enjoying the concert.
