Two workshops, one coming up later this month and the other in mid-August, no doubt will be of interest to many readers.
On Sunday July 23, Stephanie Neira will present “Siglo de Oro,” her first Spanish dance baroque workshop The workshop will take place from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Sunset Movement Arts Dance Studio, 1647 Taraval Street, San Francisco. The workshop will be an initiation into the Spanish Baroque, capturing the spirit of the 17th century in Spain through the basic dance steps and a dance to the music of those times.
Stephanie Neira, a flamenco/Spanish dancer, was first introduced to Baroque music/dance by Charlene Brendler Director of the Streicher Trio and Angene Feves teacher and historian of Baroque dance. With the Streicher Trio Stephanie performed in “Iberian Flare!”. dancing the sarabande, la folia and a fusion of Spanish contemporary dance with Baroque music.
Being a novice in Baroque dance she started taking workshops with Catherine Turocy followed by workshops on Spanish Baroque dance with Alan Jones, Ana Yepes and María José Ruiz Mayordomo.
Stephanie continues to perform her Spanish Baroque Dances like the Espanoletta, chacona, jácara etc. and would like to share these dances that were written down in the 17th and 18th centuries to others that have an interest in the history of Spanish dance.

On Saturday, August 19, Paul Flight and members of the California Bach Society will host a summer choral workshop on J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Director Flight will discuss and rehearse choruses and chorales from the great, glorious, and charming masterwork.
The Christmas Oratorio is composed of six cantatas, five of them with elaborate opening choruses. Workshop participants will sing the opening choruses from each cantata, and there will be a selection of chorales, such as “Brich an, O schönes Morgenlicht” and character choruses, such as “Wo ist der neugeborne König der Juden?” and “Lasset uns nun gehen zu Bethlehem.”
The workshop takes place from 10:30–3:30 in Palo Alto. The $55 includes both music and lunch. As is customary for CBS’s summer workshops, scores will be will be available for download several weeks in advance.
