“J.S. Bach Missa Brevis & Cantata 21” The California Bach Society, recently awarded “Best Baroque Performance” by San Francisco Classical Voice for its 2016 production of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, presents Bach’s beloved cantata Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (BWV 21) and the elegant Missa Brevis in G (BWV 236). With no less than three different choral fugues, two graceful arias, and a wonderfully expressive soprano-alto duet, the Missa is a worthy companion to Cantata 21. Paul Flight directs the 30-voice chorus and a baroque orchestra of oboes, trumpets, timpani, and strings. Vocal soloists are Caroline Jou Armitage, soprano; Paul Flight, countertenor; Jonathan Thomas, tenor; and Sepp Hammer, bass. Read more . . .

SFEMS presents the Aulos Ensemble
“Handel and His World” Christopher Krueger, flauto traverso and recorder; Marc Schachman, baroque oboe; Linda Quan, baroque violin; Myron Lutzke, baroque cello; and Arthur Haas, harpsichord, perform a program centering on the musical giant George Frideric Handel, juxtaposed with two other composers he greatly admired, Henry Purcell and Georg Philipp Telemann. Selections include Aulos’s own Suite from Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, one of Telemann’s New Paris Quartets, and a great deal of fine chamber music for three and four voices by both Handel and Telemann. Formed in 1973 by five Juilliard graduates, Aulos was one of America’s first “original instrument” ensembles, and its accomplishments over the years have given it pre-eminence in the early music movement. Aulos’s rich and diverse program covering 4 decades of compelling music showcases the talents of these superb musicians. Read more . . .

“Opening Recital: A Room with a View” In celebration of Claudio Monteverdi’s birthday, the Green Mountain Consort and Live Oak Baroque Orchestra with countertenor Christopher Fritzsche perform sacred and secular selections from the master’s two late volumes: The Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi (1638) and the Selva morale e spirituale (1640). Highlights include settings of Petrarch’s Hor che’l ciel e la terra, with its chilling opening passage, and the bittersweet Vago augelletto. Stunning instrumental works by Biagio Marini (including some of his ‘curiose e moderne inventioni’) and Dario Castello (especially works in ‘stil moderno’) provide further flavor and piquant views of the fertile northern Italian landscape.

“Mad About You” Songs and instrumental music composed for the 18th century English theater, and built around the career of the singer and actress Anne Bracegirdle. The concert program will include music composed by Purcell and Eccles and will explore music written about “mad” characters, and the genre of “mad” songs; the tragic songs performed by female characters frequently portrayed as love-sick, crazy, and on the fringe of society. The program will include mad songs and incidental music from plays like Don Quixote, The Tempest, The Mad Lover, and Abdelazar. Guest artists Melissa Cocco (recorder) and Farley Pearce (gamba) join Claudia Liliana Gantiver (recorder) and Angelique Zuluaga, (soprano).
