Berkeley Baroque Strings is an amateur orchestra of string players, led by Kati Kyme, who conducts, instructs, coaches and inspires the players in the essence of Baroque style, technique and elegant musicianship.

University of California Alumni Chorus and Chamber Chorus
Dr. Mark Sumner, conductor, with the Jubilate Orchestra presents “Voices of Change,” a celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, featuring J.S. Bach’s Reformation Chorale Cantata Ein feste Burg as well as movements from “Messyah!” a modern re-imagining of Handel’s Messiah by British composer Paul Ayres. Our concert honors these and other composers known for their pivotal roles in the history of choral music from the past to the present, including Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and Schoenberg, and will feature the Bay Area’s renowned Jubilate Orchestra, as well as guest soloists Mickala Cheadle, soprano; Kate Offer, soprano; Leandra Ramm, mezzo soprano; and Ed Betts, tenor.

“Purloined Pages ” Belle Bulwinkle (Mills faculty), fortepiano; Cynthia Keiko Black, violin; and David Morris, cello, perform Music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Fred Frith. Purloined Pages is a concert of transcriptions, or you could call them translations, from one genre to another; for instance, a four-hand piano duo becomes a piano trio. The performers have made their own arrangements of the pieces on the concert. These arrangements in particular give the strings more interesting and challenging parts than the normal classic era trio literature. The program also includes a Beethoven Bagatelle for solo piano transmogrified for our trio by famous Mills composer Fred Frith.

Thomas Tallis Workshop near Sacramento
Exploring the many styles of music by Thomas Tallis (1505–1585) Dr. Lee Lovallo leads a reading session for singers surveying Tallis’s music: sacred, secular, Protestant and Catholic. Tallis, together with William Byrd, produced music of exemplary quality in England during the 16th century. We will read mostly polyphonic pieces in four voice parts using modern editions. Organ accompaniment will be available as needed, but good reading skills will be helpful. Scores available free online or for purchase at the event. $10 fee; music is free download or $10 at workshop. Sponsored by Renaissance Choir Sacramento, Dr. Lee T. Lovallo, Director.
