Tish Berlin is offering a number of recorder and early music drop-in classes from January to March, 2018:
The Italian 16th-Century Madrigal Explore the lush harmonies and dangerous chromaticism of the late 16th century Italian madrigal by composers such as Gesualdo, Monteverdi, and Marenzio. Ground-breaking and earth-shaking works for upper intermediate to advanced singers, viols, recorders, and other like instruments. [Tuesday evenings, 7:00–8:30 p.m. Part I January 9–February 6. Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque—What’s the Difference? For those who would like to have a deeper understanding of the differences between Medieval, Renaissance, and baroque styles. We’ll explore a wide range of repertoire within each of these large categories, through lots of playing, listening and some lecturing. Works ranging from chant and early polyphony to formes fixes and mass settings to chansons and madrigals to sonatas and concertos. For all levels, all instruments and voices. The Art of the Fugue This class will work on Contrapuncti from J.S. Bach’s Kunst der Fuge, as well as fugues by other Baroque composers. For advanced recorder and viol players. [Wednesday evenings, 7:00–8:30 p.m. Part I January 10–February 67. Part II February 14, February 28–March 21. Minimum needed for each class: 4. Fee: $25 per class]
