ABC at CJC

An English Country Garden of Music

The SFEMS-CJC series resumes on Sunday, January 21, with the Alphabet Baroque Club, who will perform a charming concert of (mostly) British composers, with some commentary on British music and composers and their relation to the English country house of the 16th–18th centuries. Club members Judiyaba, treble viol and pardessus; Maria Caswell, baroque violin; Gwyneth Davis, viola da gamba; and Phebe Craig-harpsichord, will play works by Tobias Hume, Orlando Gibbons, Thomas Arne, and John Jenkins.

The Alphabet Baroque Club is a lighthearted group that plays seriously beautiful music. Now internationally acclaimed since their appearance at the 2015 Galway (Ireland) Early Music Festival, the ABC performs regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area. The ABC uses historically accurate instruments to explore the music of the baroque in its own sonority, and also happily re-orchestrates pieces to fit the ensemble. The ABC is based in Sonoma County.

The CJC offers a casual and intimate environment where the audience can enjoy a light meal and sip a glass of wine or a cup of coffee while enjoying the concert. The concert starts at 4:30 pm at the California Jazz Conservatory, 2087 Addison Street, Berkeley. Tickets are $20 (general admission) and go on sale for each concert approximately one month in advance.
