John Rice, musicologist, and Revital Schmerling, soprano
College of Liberal & Creative Arts, San Francisco State University, presents “Music in Arcadia: Batoni’s Portrait of Giacinta Orsini and Aurisicchio’s Cantata” a lecutre and recital by John Rice, musicologist; and Revital Schmerling, soprano. John Rice (musicologist) will present a lecture related to the musical content of Pompeo Batoni’s Rococo portrait of Giacinta Orsini (1741–1759). Pompeo Batoni (1707–1787) was a portrait painter who imbedded allegorical and mythological imagery into his works, and “Portrait of Princess Giacinta Orsini Buoncampagni Ludovisi), circa 1758, at her harpsichord and with a lyre under her right arm is lush with meaning. Placed on the princess’s harpsicord is a music manuscript by Antonio Aurisicchio (1710–1781), which is housed in the Frank V. de Bellis Collection. Rice transcribed Aurisicchio’s cantata, and SFSU School of Music student Revital Schmerling (soprano) will sing the final recitative (“Rendano o numi”) and aria (“Vanne o padre”) from the cantata. Revital Schmerling (soprano) will perform the final recitative and aria of Antonio Aurisicchio’s cantata that is featured in the portrait.

Barefoot Chamber Concerts
“The Miseducation of Quaver: a natural history of a viol consort.” The program features some of its (and its audiences’!)Barefoot is delighted to be able to present Quaver (Brady Lanier, Loren Ludwig, )Marie Szuts, and Tobi Szuts), who are Not Your Parents Viol Consort), playing a new program that celebrates ten years as an ensemble favorite pieces. Their program includes a selection drawn from the ensemble’s eclectic, surprising, and tuneful repertoire including works by Byrd, Jenkins, Shostakovich, RATATAT, Purcell, and others. It’s hard to believe, but Quaver turns 10! And no, they haven’t stopped pushing the limits of what viols will play. Their lush sound will grace pinnacles of the consort tradition, contemporary sonorities, and miniature gems of the renaissance. There will surely be a surprise or two, so come prepared for a wild ride. There will, of course, be the usual Barefoot snax. The lovely wooden acoustic of the Parish Hall at St. Mark’s will provide the perfect place for this concert.

“Ave Virgo—Music for the Feasts of Our Lady” The next installment in SFRV’s 2017-18 Season, “A Nun, A Queen, The Lady & A King.” This exquisite concert of rarely performed music will feature Heinrich Isaac’s (ca. 1450–1517) 6-part Missa Virgo Prudentissima. Woven between the movements of the mass will be 4, 5, 6, and 8-part motets (many of them from the Medici Codex of 1518) written by Josquin, Obrecht, Mouton, Willaert, Jacquet de Mantua, and the mysterious Jean Le Santier, for the feast days of the Virgin Mary. Experience the dazzling beauty of this amazing sacred polyphony, resplendent with the magic of interwoven voices, and the glory of a cappella singing.

Sonoma Bach
“Sacred Realms: The Eternal City” In the late 15th century, the young Josquin Desprez spent a number of years in Rome as a member of the papal choir. We know this perhaps most surprisingly because he carved his name in one of the choir stalls in the Sistine Chapel. Our concert is inspired by Josquin’s Rome: Hearing and Composing in the Sistine Chapel, a wonderful (and readable!) book by Stanford scholar Jesse Rodin. We follow in Rodin’s steps by exploring music which Guillaume Dufay, Marbrianus de Orto, Josquin and later composers wrote for the papal chapel. Featuring Josquin’s Illibata Dei virgo nutrix and movements from his L’homme armé masses.
