Tish Berlin will be offering four different classes for upper intermediate to advanced recorder players in May and June.
Two separate classes will be offered on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. and from 3:00-4:30 p.m., May 16–30 and June 13. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Art of Fugue will be the subject of the 1:00 p.m. class. This class will work in depth on contrapuncti from Bach’s great opus Die Kunst der Fuge. This class is open to upper intermediate to advanced players of recorders and requires a minimum of 4 to run.
The 3:00 p.m. class will explore the art of preluding (it’s easier than you think). The class will lead students through the steps to become proficient at making beautiful preludes in the style of French Baroque composer Jacques-Martin Hotteterre. We will use Hotteterre’s preludes from his L’art de préluder as a model, and then use his exercises to learn how to make our own. This class is open to upper intermediate to advanced players of recorders and requires a minimum of 4 to run.
There are also two separate Thursday classes from 1:00–2:30 and 3:00–4:30 p.m., running from May 17–31 and June 14. The 1:00 p.m. class will explore chansons and motets of Dufay and Josquin. From beautiful sacred motets to rambunctious secular chansons, the class will cover works by two of France’s most famous composers of the 15th and 16th centuries This class is for intermediate to upper intermediate players of recorders and requires a minimum of 4 to run.
The 3:00 p.m. class is an ongoing ensemble class. One or two spaces may be available in this pre-existing class. Students can work on technique, repertoire, and consort skills in a small and friendly group. This class is for upper intermediate recorder players.
