Matthias Maute, whose Ensemble Caprice will be featured on the SFEMS concert series next spring, will be in the Bay Area in early September, and our community of recorder players has been presented with a rare opportunity to play in concert with one of the world’s great recorder players. On Saturday, September 8, the recorder virtuoso and composer will be in San José when he brings The American Recorder Rally to the Bay Area. In association with The American Recorder Society (ARS), Mr. Maute’s project is being produced in recorder communities around the country. The project kicked off in March in Seattle and Portland. Participants at these events enthusiastically reported that they loved performing with such a renowned artist and the intensity of the event. Both concerts were very well received by the audiences.
Here, the recorder is featured in all its splendor: the recorder orchestra delves into the consort music of the 17th century and accompanies Mr. Maute during the contemporary concerto that he composed specifically for the Rally (hot off the press!). The solo repertoire is intended to showcase the extravagant beauty and virtuosity of our instrument even when alone on the stage.
At the American Recorder Rally you may dare to perform as a participant, or applaud enthusiastically as an audience member—it’s your choice!
Mr. Maute will present a two-hour workshop/rehearsal prior to a concert. Music will be provided by email in advance. During the concert, workshop participants will join him for two pieces. In addition to the participant performances, Mr. Maute will play a number of solo pieces. The workshop (for up to 40 intermediate to advanced recorder players) begins at 4:00 p.m. The concert, Telemann: Tweets and Twitters, follows at 7:30 p.m.
