Agave Baroque
“The Violinist With Eyes of Fire” Aaron Westman, baroque violin; Henry Lebedinsky, harpsichord; William Skeen, viola da gamba; and Kevin Cooper, baroque guitar & theorbo, perform music of Arcangelo Corelli, et al. Corelli was the first true celebrity violinist, whose presence and personality were as much a part of his appeal as his playing. He assembled an orchestra of virtuosi and inspired several generations of major violinists and amateurs alike, including the young Handel, who moved to Corelli’s adopted home of Rome in 1706. Agave Baroque ventures abroad to present a program of works by Corelli and composers he influenced from around the world, including music from Mexico, Sweden, China, and Russia.
“Attuned: a non-concert experience” is the Bay Area’s new and unique invitation to the world of Classical music. Curated by sister ensembles Agave Baroque and Sylvestris Quartet in collaboration with the California Jazz Conservatory, each program invites you to enjoy a cabaret-style show with a multimedia experience and narration that brings you the stories behind the music.

“Vivaldi the Teacher.” As part of an ongoing partnership with The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance program, Maestro Nicolas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale will honor the teacher-student tradition with a program of Vivaldi double concerti performed by recent Juilliard graduates Alana Youssefian, Keiran Campbell and David Dickey alongside their former instructors—PBO Musicians Elizabeth Blumenstock, Phoebe Carrai and Gonzalo X. Ruiz.

Workshop with Karen Clark & Theresa Wong — EVENT CANCELED
“Sculpting Air: Medieval & Modern Vocal Improv I & II.” Vajra Voices director, Karen Clark and composer/ cellist/vocalist Theresa Wong present two workshops around the music and poetry of the 12th century mystic Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179); and, the Taoist Immortal, Sun Bu’er (1119–1182). Karen Clark will teach a chant by Hildegard von Bingen; and, Theresa Wong will lead a vocal improvisation, in sculpting sound on a poem of Sun Bu’er. Inspired by the strength and power of wisdom inherent in mysticism, we invite you to join us in a process of discovery to resonate, express, and create.
Proceeds from these workshops go toward production costs for the Vajra Voices & Kitka Concert with Shira Kammen and Theresa Wong at Grace Cathedral on The Eve of the March, Friday, January 18, 2019 at 7:30pm. Save the date!

Sessions. Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale presents the next installment in the PBO Sessions series: The HIP Revolution. The evening will be led by Music Director Nicholas McGegan, Ben Sosland of The Juilliard School’s Historical Performance Program and Philharmonia Chorale Director Bruce Lamott, as they take audiences on a journey from HIP’s rebellious beginnings until now with performances by three recent Juilliard graduates and their PBO musician teachers.

“Ifigenia in Aulide”–abridged concert version. Based on Euripedes’ tragedy, Iphigenia in Aulis, Giovanni Porta’s opera dramatizes an episode during the Trojan War when King Agamemnon is compelled to sacrifice his daughter Ifigenia to the goddess Diana so that the Greek army may set sail for Troy. With a libretto by Apostolo Zeno, the opera was a rousing success at its premiere at the 1738 Munich Carnival.

They’re Back! Barefoot’s House Band, with the fabulous addition of Andy Canepa, harpsichord, bring you the fruits of their latest foraging in the sun-kissed fields of French Musical Elegance. As well as Marais and Forqueray, they have found some rare arrangements of Rameau, and even some amazingly doleful Couperin. In a year (2018–19 season) when none of the Bay Area soi-disant early music organizations are presenting any French baroque music at all, Barefoot’s November concert is your home-grown island of overwhelming French elegance.
