Early Music Open Mic Night
Join us for Early Music Open Mic Night in the East Bay, 4th Wednesday of every month. This is your opportunity to perform early music in a friendly cabaret style setting. Instrumentalists, singers, soloists, groups, students, youngsters, professionals — all are welcome! Please email [email protected] with the date you’d like to perform. Time slots will be up to 15 minutes, and there will be six time slots on each night. A harpsichord as well as a piano will be available on site. Food and drinks will be provided.

SFEMS Baroque Workshop
“A Transalpina Sommerreise: Venice to Hamburg” Each summer, the San Francisco Early Music Society assembles a world-class faculty to teach six weeks of workshops giving students of all ages and at all levels the chance to study historical performance of music from the Middle Ages through the Classical era and beyond. An added joy are the weekly public concerts the faculty give, featuring first-rate performances of both well-loved and unusual repertory. These inspired concerts are filled with the enthusiasm of music-making in a less formal setting, and often bring surprises as musicians spontaneously interact and play off each other’s energy.
Take a musical journey across the alps to explore the vibrant music cultures of two rich, interconnected, yet diverse cities in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: Venice and Hamburg. The overt expressiveness and influence of music-making in Venice on that of the northern regions including Hamburg during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries serve as the background for many compositional developments and exciting stylistic trends. Seminal Baroque composers Georg Philipp Telemann, influential in the musical life of Hamburg, and Antonio Lucio Vivaldi, Giovanni Gabrieli, and Claudio Monteverdi, active in Venice, are just a few examples on which this repertoire thrives. This program further dusts off the works of lesser-known composers such as Johann Staden, Hieronymus Praetorius, and Johann Hermann Schein, allowing the listener to discover new musical tastes, textures and styles. Become enraptured with the diversity of sounds from these Baroque cities, including early brass, recorder, oboe, bassoon, flute, strings, organ, harpsichord and voices all set perfectly within the sublime acoustic of Sonoma’s Schroeder Hall.
