Regular meeting for recorder players, with guest conductor Glen Shannon. Newcomers welcome. Bring recorders, stand, and other early instruments. Music provided. Refreshments. The Sacramento Recorder Society is a chapter of the American Recorder Society. Members range from low-intermediate to advanced players, all with a love of early music. Players of other early music instruments are also welcome.

California Bach Society, Paul Flight, Artistic Director
J.S. Bach, Magnificat in D major, and Jan Dismas Zelenka, Missa Divi Xaverii. During Bach’s time in Leipzig, Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679–1745) worked at the court in Dresden, only 70 miles away. Bach (1685–1750) held Zelenka in great esteem. While Zelenka was better appreciated in Dresden in money as well as status than Bach was in Leipzig, it was the other way around in the centuries to follow. After Zelenka’s death, the overprotective church and court locked away his manuscripts. Lack of heirs and the political circumstances in his native Czech Republic contributed further to his posthumous neglect. Most of Zelenka’s 250 stellar compositions didn’t receive worldwide attention until after the iron curtain was lifted in 1989. The exuberant Missa Divi Xaverii that opens our season received its modern-day premiere only in 2014. The work features festive trumpets and timpani, and forms the perfect combination with Bach’s beloved Magnificat.

Renaissance Singers’ Retreat
Weekend workshop for singers, studying and performing works of Renaissance polyphony, directed by Dr. William Mahrt. Dr. Mahrt has chosen works of Jacob Handl AKA Jacobus Gallus (1550–1591). Handl represented the Counter-Reformation in Bohemia, mixing the polyphonic style of the High Renaissance Franco-Flemish School with that of the new, polychoral, Venetian School. Continuous snack table, Saturday 5 PM sherry hour.

InterMusic SF presents SF Music Day 2019
“Rebels & Renegades” Come listen local at the 12th annual SF Music Day, the Bay Area’s free music festival in downtown San Francisco, presented by InterMusic SF. SF Music Day celebrates a sweeping panorama of music of our region, from string quartets to jazz combos, new music pioneers to chamber groups steeped in musical sounds from across the globe. With repertoire that spans inventive contemporary works and timeless classics, and fresh young talents sharing the stage with seasoned veterans, SF Music Day showcases the dynamism and diversity of Bay Area music making. Come with open ears, to experience all that the Bay’s vibrant music community has to offer. All concerts are one half hour in length. Early music groups include the Sylvestris Quartet (1:30 PM, Green Room), performing two pairings of historically inspired renegade composers, Matthew Locke/Edward Elgar, and Heinrich Biber/Ludwig van Beethoven; and Nash Baroque (7:15 PM, Taube Atrium Theater), performing music and dance celebrating the famous 18th-century dance sensation, Barbarini Campanini; a brief lesson in baroque dance to follow the performance!
