Announcing the 2020 SFRS Recorder Workshop!
Enrollment is now open for the annual San Francisco Recorder Society workshop. The fantastic team of Rotem Gilbert and Hanneke van Proosdij will once again provide a marvelous day of satisfying music and instruction for all in attendance.
This year’s SFRS workshop, “A Hike through Germany,” will be presented on Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 17, 2020. This national holiday is an unusual day of the week for most music workshop events, but last year’s “Love is in the Air” workshop was so enthusiastically received (with a record attendance!) that we are trying it again on President’s Day this year. We hope it will allow for full participation from our regular participants as well as players who are new to the workshop experience.
Come along with us as Hanneke and Rotem guide this musical hike through Germany to show us spectacular views through the music of great German composers from various periods in history. J.S. Bach and Heinrich Isaac are among the star composers we’ll meet along the way.
For more detailed biographical information on our conductors, please visit the SFEMS Recorder Workshop faculty web page.
The San Francisco Recorder Society Workshop is known for being particularly open to those who may never have attended a music workshop in the past with sessions organized for players of differing skill levels, from low-intermediate to advanced players. If you have friends who play, or students who have been hesitant to attend a workshop for fear of not being “ready” please encourage them to join you at this event. There will be lots of friendly players who will gladly sit next to the newcomers and guide them through the music and the day. Let us know in advance if you would like to sit with a musical mentor. If you are not sure which level you play in, our self-appraisal check list (linked HERE) can help. Note: these are not strict guidelines.
The workshop takes place at Christ Church Lutheran, 1090 Quintara Street (at 20th Avenue) in San Francisco. The workshop runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (check-in and setup begins at 9:30 a.m.). Tuition is $50 for the whole day, $30 for half a day (10:00 to 1:00 or 1:30 to 4:30). Click HERE for the registration form.
All music will be provided electronically to registrants in advance. A few paper copies will be available on request for those who cannot print their own.
The fee includes all the music, coffee and other refreshments for the morning break. Bring your own lunch as there are no convenient restaurants in the immediate area. There is a kitchen available for refrigeration and warming of your food. Street parking and limited garage parking is available. The church is also accessible by public transit: it’s on the 28, and 66 MUNI bus lines and three blocks north of the L Taraval streetcar line. All areas of the church are wheelchair accessible. Please contact us in advance if you need assistance.
For the Teachers among you: We invite you to share this workshop invitation with your students. Some scholarships are available and we are happy to consider requests on the basis of need.
