Vallejo Choral Society — February Guest Speaker Series
Dr. Bianca Hall presents “Singing Hymns and Songs from the Shape Note Tradition”, “Now shall my inward joy arise, And burst into a Song.” Join us for this hands-on introduction to the Shape Note singing tradition. Learn to read and sing shape note notation, as well as about the conventions of this American singing tradition that dates back to the 18th century. We will sing selections from this rich body of music by a variety of early American composers, including William Billings and Daniel Read. VCS’s February series comprises four unique presentations by renowned clinicians, focusing on singing traditions and insights. Each 75-minute session comprises an interactive exploration of musical history, culture, and practice.

Amateur Music Network — Singing Saturdays with Ragnar Bohlin
“February in France” Each session is a 75-minute-long exploration of techniques that will make selected passages from a great choral work beautiful and musical. Although they are not choral rehearsals as such, they will include interludes of singing together through parts and movements of the pieces being studied. It’s best if you download your music and review the parts. All singers will benefit from healthy warm ups, and all will learn about the choral masterworks in our sessions. And we always have fun!

California Bach Society — Online Cantata Workshop
This time we look at J.S. Bach’s Cantata 45, “Es ist dir gesagt, Mensch, was gut ist.” Join artistic director Paul Flight, CalBach singers, and guests from all over the world to sing, listen, and learn together. We will be joined by internationally renowned soloists: tenor Mark Bonney (live from Glasgow, Scotland), bass-baritone Paul Max Tipton (live from Boston), and our director, countertenor Paul Flight. We’ll practice sections of the choral movements, sing along to an outstanding recording, learn about the cantata from Paul Flight, and enjoy all solos sung live from soloists’ homes during the event.All participants will be muted during the event. Whether you’re a lifelong singer, a beginner, or a listener, you will experience a full Bach cantata in a deeply satisfying new way.

Santa Cruz Baroque Festival — Love Songs Through the Ages
How many types of love are there? In English, we have many words that shade different meanings on love: Adoration, reverence, devotion, attraction, infatuation, affection, desire. But it’s clear that the variety of experience of love outstrips the capacity of our language to capture it. Thankfully, our human species has a tool to convey emotions that outstrip the capacity of words to convey: music! Beginning in the middle ages with the songs of the trouvères, whose chivalric expression of love followed a strict code, and Hildegard von Bingen, whose songs of religious devotion were tinged with other passions; ending with folk songs of the twentieth century that meld the love of freedom and nature with romance, our concert explores love. Along the way we make a stop in the Renaissance for some songs that exercised the new-made musical tools to convey emotion and bodily motion; music that weeps, laughs and dances.
