“Vivaldi’s Venice.” A concert performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Juditha triumphans devicta Holofernis barbarie. Vivaldi’s only surviving oratorio tells the story of the widow Judith, whose extraordinary measures protect her city from foreign invasion. With soloists mezzo-soprano Cécile van de Sant as Juditha; mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux as Vagaus; mezzo-soprano Diana Moore as Holofernes; soprano Dominique Labelle as Abra; mezzo-soprano Virginia Warnken as Ozias; and the Philharmonia Chorale, Bruce Lamott, Director, as everybody else.

Pennywhistle and piping sensation David Brewer joins the exuberant fiddle-playing of Deby Benton Grosjean and Leslie Hirsch (a 1980s Baroque Festival alumna), complemented by special guest Peter Maund and Lux Musica’s continuo section. Soprano Margaret Secour and contralto Katherine McKee will be joined by organist Michael Secour and the Amador Valley High School String Quartet in a Lenten performance of this magnificent work, described as “the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer.”

University of California Alumni Chorus, Dr. Mark Sumner, Conductor
“Gems of the Mexican Baroque.” Music from Spanish Colonial Mexico and early California. The mass service of Juan Bautista Sancho’s Misa de Los Angeles serves as the framework for a program including 17th- and 18th-century works by Antonio de Salazar, Juan Gutiérrez de Padilla, and arrangements of traditional hymns and sacred works of the period. The concert will also include instrumental folk music from the 18th- and 19th-century mission scene and traditional Spanish songs of California. With William García Ganz, keyboards, and Los Arribeños de San Francisco, a group of musicians expert in the performance practice of the period of the California missions.
