A Tribute to Bruce Wetmore (November 22, 1946–July 3, 2014). We are deeply saddened by the death of Bruce Wetmore this past July. A passionate lover of harpsichord, early music, and especially baroque opera, he will be missed by many here in the Bay Area early music community and by many friends from around the globe. Join us as we celebrate his life and legacy in the Bay Area. Among our featured performers are the Vinacessi Ensemble, a group he helped nurture since its inception. Other members of the community whom he knew personally also will perform.

Hillside Club Concert Series
“Masonic Brotherhood: Mozart, Haydn & Pleyel” Period instrument ensemble the New Esterházy Quartet (Kati Kyme & Lisa Weiss, violin; Anthony Martin, viola; and William Skeen, cello) play works by Mozart, Haydn, and Haydn’s student Ignaz Pleyel. Known today as piano builder and music publisher, Pleyel was a prolific composer, well-known in late 18th-century Europe and America. All three composers were members of Masonic lodges. The program includes Pleyel’s Quartet in D minor, Op. 8, No. 3; Haydn’s Quartet in D, Op. 50, No. 6 “The Frog;” and Mozart’s Quartet in B flat, K. 589.

Chris Norman, wooden flute, pipes, and voice; and David Greenberg, Cape Breton fiddle, baroque violin, and octave violin; with guest artist Gilbert Martinez, harpsichord, perform Celtic music from the 18th century, which combines traditional and baroque works from Scotland and Ireland, many by way of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Occidental Center for the Arts
“Afternoon in Italy” a workshop for recorders and viols with David Morris. Come and explore the “new” musical style of the late Renaissance and the dawn of the baroque. We will work on selected madrigals and some larger pieces as well. The afternoon’s selections will vary in difficulty but will be accessible to players of intermediate ability and up.

Singers’ Retreat
Weekend workshop for singers, studying and performing works of Renaissance polyphony. Dr. William Mahrt will direct singers in selections from the motets of Jean Mouton (1459–1522), including ceremonial works for the court of Francis I, commemorating his coronation and his victory in the Battle of Marignano, and for the court of Louis XII, for the birth of a daughter and for the death of his queen, Anne of Brittany.
