San Francisco Renaissance Voices
“In Memoriam: The Best of the Dead” On Friday night, October 31, 2004 (yes, Hallowe’en night!) the very first San Francisco Renaissance Voices concert was presented at Seventh Avenue Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. Ten years to the day, we’ll celebrate our birthday in that church, which has become our artistic home, by performing the same work that started it all—Tomás Luis de Victoria’s magnificent Officium Defunctorum, written for the funeral of his royal patron the Dowager Empress Maria—which also began our group’s “tradition” of performing the Office of the Dead each year at this time. This program will also include elegies written by Ockeghem, Josquin, Byrd and Morley for composers who inspired and nurtured them. For those of you coming to the concert on Hallowe’en we invite you to enjoy another San Francisco Renaissance Voices tradition and come in costume!

Joined by MusicSources Artistic Director Gilbert Martinez, they spotlight works counted amongst the greatest in the French repertoire. Hidden Valley Road Scholar Early Music Workshop
“Music of Italy and France,” a week-long workshop for recorder and viola da gamba. Classes include consort and technique, master class, medieval, Renaissance and baroque repertoire, and topic classes including “From Notes to Music—delve into the mysterious process of turning notes on the page into expressive musical interpretations,” “Musical Decisions, or How an Ensemble Works—learn how to choose instrumentation, repertoire, how to tune, and more,” “Le Bon Gout: Introduction to French Baroque Ornamentation,” and much, much more! All-workshop orchestra conducted by Frances Blaker both weeks. Faculty includes Letitia Berlin, Frances Blaker, Louise Carslake, Justin Godoy, recorder; John Dornenburg, viola da gamba. (Workshop runs through Saturday, November 8. First of 2 weeks.
