“Levantera” East of the River (Nina Stern, recorder and chalumeau; Daphna Mor, recorder and ney; Tamer Pinarbasi, kanun; Jesse Kotansky, violin; and John Hadfield, percussion), perform medieval music of the Mediterranean, the Balkans, Armenia and the Middle East, featuring works from the Robertsbridge Codex, British Library manuscripts, Armenian poet and composer Sayat Nova (1712–1795), and oral tradition. The program includes early songs and traditional dances from this extraordinary region—a fascinating and beautiful repertory, the origins of which go back centuries and much of which is little known to today’s audiences.
