Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and other works of Claudio Monteverdi. Grammy Award-winning tenor Aaron Sheehan returns to interpret the Testo role in Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda and renowned soprano Christine Brandes makes her Magnificat debut in the role of Clorinda. Brandes will also sing Monteverdi’s ‘love letter’ Se i languidi miei sguardi. The program also includes two of of the five “vanitas” settings that stand at the beginning of Monteverdi’s magisterial collection of sacred music, Selva morale et spirituale (1640). Soprano Jennifer Paulino, countertenor Andrew Rader and bass Robert Stafford complete an ensemble that includes instrumentalists Rob Diggins, Jolianne Einem, David Wilson, John Dornenburg and Jillon Stoppels Dupree.

“The Glories of Renaissance and Baroque Keyboard Music” John Prescott, Ph.D., presents a series of talks on the development of keyboard music from its beginnings in late Renaissance Italy, England, and Spain, through the baroque, to the era of Haydn and Mozart. Day 3: “Toucher le Clavcin” The sumptuous world of French keyboard music. Singers’ Retreat
Weekend workshop for singers, studying and performing works of Renaissance polyphony. Dr. William Mahrt will direct singers in a Spanish Vespers for St. Michael the Archangel, including chant, psalms, hymns, and a Magnificat setting. Featured composers will include Tomás Luis de Victoria, Cristobal de Morales, Francisco Guerrero, and Antonio de Cabezón. Rehearsal will be broken by Dr. Mahrt’s mini-lectures on the composers and repertory. Continuous snack table included.

Musical Waves
“Primarily Bach” Elizabeth Blumenstock, violin, and Elaine Thornburgh, harpsichord, perform transcriptions for violin of some of the Goldberg Variations, the three-part ricercar from “The Musical Offering”, as well as Bach’s own keyboard transcription in G Major after the Adagio from the C Major Suite for unaccompanied violin. Duo pieces to be performed are Bach’s delightful G Major sonata for violin and harpsichord and a sublime Schmelzer sonata with the harpsichord accompanying the violin.
