East Bay Recorder Society
“Music of the Eastern European Renaissance” Derek Tam directs a collegium workshop for recorders, early winds and brass, soft reeds, strings, and singers. The late 16th century was a time of political and cultural renewal in Eastern Europe. In particular, the lands of Poland and Bohemia stood at the forefront of this artistic flowering. This workshop will explore two rarely-heard major works from the Eastern European Renaissance: the Lamentations of Jeremiah, as set by the Slovenian composer Jacobus Gallus; and the Missa Paschalis by the Polish composer Marcin Leopolita. Full- or half-day participation possible. Bring instruments (pitch: A=440), music stand, and bag lunch. Music is included in workshop fee; PDFs will be sent beforehand upon request. Snacks and beverages will be provided for breaks. Space is limited; pre-register early.

Prescott Lectures
“The Glories of Renaissance and Baroque Keyboard Music” John Prescott, Ph.D., presents a series of talks on the development of keyboard music from its beginnings in late Renaissance Italy, England, and Spain, through the baroque, to the era of Haydn and Mozart. Day 5: “Haydn, Mozart and their contemporaries: the emergence of the piano.” In the late 18th century, the harpsichord, clavichord and the newly developed forte piano all coexisted, and provided composers of keyboard music new frontiers of expression and musical possibilities.
