The collaboration between SFEMS and the California Jazz Conservatory resumes on Sunday, October 11, with the return of Musica Pacifica (Judith Linsenberg, recorder; Elizabeth Blumentstock, violin; Josh Lee, viola da gamba; John Lenti, theorbo; and Charles Sherman, harpsichord), who will take this series—which up to now has focused mainly on the improvisatory link between early music and jazz performance—in a slightly different direction.
The world-renowned Bay Area baroque ensemble goes into the studio the day after this performance to record a Paris Quartet by Telemann and a sonata by Giuseppe Sammartini. The group will perform these pieces, along with a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi. They also will discuss how the group approaches their work in the recording studio, emphasizing the differences in rehearsing for a live concert and a recording.
The concert begins at 4:30 p.m., at the California Jazz Conservatory (formerly The Jazzschool), 2087 Addison St., between Shattuck and Milvia, in downtown Berkeley. The venue is one block from downtown Berkeley BART, and parking is easily available at the Addison Street parking garage. Street parking is free on Sundays and also relatively easy in the afternoon.
All tickets are $20; reservations are highly recommended, as the venue is small and intimate. Many performances in this series sell out in advance. You can purchase tickets online, or call the CA Jazz Conservatory box office at 510-845-5373 or email [email protected].
