The Swedenborgian Church of San Francisco now hosts a music concert series as unique as its historic setting. Titled “Second Sundays” the monthly series presents six diverse one-hour concerts that bring to life classical and traditional music from the Middle Ages through the baroque and Classical eras, with modern interpretations, and some inspired original works.
The July 10th concert features Shira Kammen and Peter Maund (of Alcatraz Ensemble) performing Iberian, French, Italian and English Renaissance and medieval melodies, based on troubadour pieces and cantigas, plus inspired original arrangements and compositions.
The Arts & Crafts style sanctuary, a National Historic Landmark, is an ideal intimate setting for performances by the smaller, acoustic instrumental and vocal ensembles that are scheduled. Said a recent performer from a private event, “ I think this is the loveliest place to hear chamber music in San Francisco.”
The one-hour evening concerts continue on the second Sunday of each month, 7:30 p.m., through October 9. Still to come this season are concerts by Musica Pacifica (August 14), the New Esterházy Quartet (September 11), and Varja Voices (October 9). Performance listings and descriptions are available at:
