Delicate as a Flute with the Power of Brass

Joining Archetti Baroque Strings for their SFEMS performances the weekend of December 9–11 are two distinguished soloists, soprano Clara Rottsalk and baroque trumpeter Kathryn Adduci. Ms. Rottsalk already is familiar to Bay Area audiences and admired for her appearances with ABS, Magnificat, and with Musica Pacifica on their December 2012 SFEMS concert. Trumpeter Adduci is less well known, which this short introduction takes the opportunity to remedy in part.

k-adduci-3Adduci’s career as both a teacher and performer has taken her around the world, from her native Australia to Asia, Europe, and North America. Performing on modern trumpet she has appeared with numerous Australian orchestras, including as a soloist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and performing with professional orchestras in Malaysia, Canada, and the United States. On baroque trumpet, she has performed with numerous period instrument groups across North America, including Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Toronto), Apollo’s Fire (Cleveland), Portland Baroque Orchestra (Oregon), Musica Angelica (Los Angeles), Atlanta Baroque Orchestra (Georgia), Texas Camerata (Fort Worth), and the Orchestra of New Spain (Dallas). She is highly-regarded for her work with historical instruments, described as “a rare treat…a highly skilled trumpeter” by the Denver Post; her playing called “flawless, elegant…delicate as that of a flute, yet with all the power and color of brass” (SanDiego.com).

She has recorded a CD of trumpet and piano works called A Trumpet Kaleidoscope and another where she is featured soloist on baroque trumpet with the Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado. Her solo performances have been broadcast on Colorado Public Radio and on ABC Australia Radio. She also can be heard on the soundtrack to the 2005 Disney movie Casanova, which was recorded on period instruments and topped the Billboard classical chart, as well as on numerous recordings on the Klavier label, performing on modern trumpet with the UNT Wind Symphony under Eugene Migliaro Corporon.

Dr. Adduci earned her Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Australia, and holds an MM from the University of Georgia and a DMA from the University of North Texas. She has been on the faculty of San Jose State University since 2005 and currently is Associate Professor of Trumpet and Brass Area Coordinator.

To truly appreciate Kathryn Adduci’s talents, of course, you will need to come to our December concert, where she will be featured in some real gems of the baroque literature, both purely instrumental music and concerted vocal works. A sure highlight will Bach’s Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (Cantata BWV 51), reckoned one of the great duets for soprano and trumpet. The virtuosic trumpet part almost certainly was written for the great Gottfried Reiche.

Don’t miss the chance to hear this acknowledged master of a difficult and beautiful instrument in the company of a brilliant solo voice and outstanding chamber orchestra.
