The San Francisco chapter of the ARS (SFRS) announces its 14th annual workshop day for recorders of all sizes, “Bohemian Rhapsody—Music of Germany and Eastern Europe.”
The workshop, directed by Louise Carslake and Hanneke van Proosdij, will take place on Saturday, February 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Christ Church Lutheran, 1090 Quintara Street (at 20th Avenue) in San Francisco.
There are 176 Tri-Point Borders in the world today—points at which three countries’ borders meet. One such point is at the intersection of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic seen in this picture (click here to see a map). Perhaps it is an appropriate image to carry us into the region of Europe where musical selections for this year’s SFRS workshop were composed…although music really has no borders.
The San Francisco Recorder Society Workshop is known for being particularly open to those who may never have attended a music workshop in the past with sessions organized for players of differing skill levels, from low-intermediate to advanced players. If you have friends who play, or students who have been hesitant to attend a workshop for fear of not being “ready” please encourage them to join you at this event. There will be lots of friendly players who will gladly sit next to the newcomers and guide them through the music and the day. Let me know in advance if you would like to sit with a musical mentor. If you are not sure which level you play in, download and look at this self-appraisal guide, which should help you decide.
Registration is now open! (Download form here) The fee is $50 which includes all the music, coffee and other refreshments for the morning break. Bring your own lunch as there are no convenient restaurants in the immediate area. There is a kitchen available for refrigeration and warming of your food. Street parking and limited garage parking is available. The church is also accessible by public transit: it’s on the 28, and 66 MUNI bus lines and three blocks north of the L Taraval streetcar line. All areas of the church are wheelchair accessible. Please contact me in advance if you need assistance. My email address is below.
For more information, please contact Florence Kress at the email or phone number provided on the registration form above, or you may direct your questions to SFRS Workshop Coordinator Greta Haug-Hryciw at [email protected]. SFRS is a chapter of the American Recorder Society an affiliate of the San Francisco Early Music Society.
