San Francisco Renaissance Voices
Derek Tam“Catch Me a Catch: A Renaissance Musical Tour with Derek Tam” A fun, interactive workshop for singers and instrumentalists. Secular music took on new importance in the Renaissance, as the advent of printing allowed for the mass circulation of songs in the vernacular. Composers explored the bawdy and the sublime in their own languages, writing everything from simple, melodic “catches” to complex polyphonic madrigals. This workshop explores characteristic songs of the Renaissance from various countries. Singers of all skill levels are welcomed to participate in this fun workshop under the direction of our Director of Educational Programs, Derek Tam, as well as instrumentalists (who will double the vocal lines). We will explore how the text informs musical expression, both vocally and instrumentally. Should you require a music stand, please bring your own; registration cost includes all printed music used for this session.

San Francisco Renaissance Voices
KMcKee2The Return of Afternoon Glee Club—English Madrigal & Part Book Singing with Katherine McKee” One of our most popular workshops returns by popular demand! Long before it was a hit TV show, GLEE was a popular musical form, closely related to catches (see previous listing about SFCV’s morning workshop on catches), and the English madrigals of the 16th century. They were so popular that clubs sprang up to sing them during the 17th and 18th centuries, often after or during supper. and King George IV himself belonged to a Glee Club before ascending the throne. San Francisco Renaissance Voices music director, Katherine McKee has put together madrigals and glees from the 16th, 17th & 18th century from some of England’s greatest composers, including an homage to Thomas Tallis and settings of poetry by Ben Johnson, Shakespeare and Goethe. This interactive workshop is a wonderful opportunity for you to sing three centuries worth of English a cappella vocal works. You’ll enjoy old favorites and hopefully find a new favorite or two, and possibly find out what it was like to sing from a part book as part of a dinner party. During the Georgian period Glee Clubs were all-male but we invite everyone to come and share in the fun! And, in the spirit of the supper club, we invite you to bring along a bottle of wine or other beverage and/or a snack or two to share afterwards (that possibly may include more singing – so bring a madrigal or two to share, should you like!) Young performers age 12-18 are encouraged to join us at no charge.
