Our 29th subscription season continues with Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine (also known as the “Vespers of 1610”), a monumental work that displays its composer’s brilliant assimilation of styles—old and new, sacred and secular—and his masterful command of a wide palette of musical structures including psalm settings, sacred concertos, hymns, motets, and sonatas, all bound together by Gregorian chant. With soloists Nils Brown, tenor; Katelyn Aungst & Julie Bosworth, sopranos; Nicholas Burns & Jay Carter, countertenors; Steven Brennfleck & Jonathan Smucker, tenors; David McFerrin, baritone; William Meinert & Jeffrey Fields, basses; and the American Bach Choir.

“London, 1845: Gratitude to Haydn” In 1845, after performing all the Beethoven Quartets, the Beethoven Quartett Society of London presented a concert of quartets by Haydn, “the great Father of that refined music.” In recreating this program, The New Esterházy Quartet (Kati Kyme and Lisa Weiss, violin; Anthony Martin, viola; and William Skeen, cello) present the perfect ending to the series of highlights from string quartet history they have presented this 2017–2018 season.

Sylvestris Quartet
“Quartet Metamorphosis: From Biber to Beethoven” Resonance @ First Church Berkeley presents San Francisco’s gut-string era Sylvestris Quartet performing a program that explores the cyclical transformation and development of the string quartet. The program centers around two boundary-pushing characters, separated by nearly 150 years: Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber and Ludwig van Beethoven. You will enjoy hearing this unusual pairing as well as works by Scarlatti, Boccherini, Haydn, and Mozart—framed with lively insight!

Les Violettes
“Render Unto Caesar.” Known for their creative programs and flawless playing, Les Violettes return for their third appearance at the California Jazz Conservatory chamber series. Band Members Corey Carleton, soprano; David Wilson, violin; Colin Shipman, viola da gamba; and Violet Grgich, harpsichord, perform music from the Court of Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor—including works by Bertoli, Sances, Schmelzer and Bononcini—on April 15, tax day. Hence the title.
