“The Well-Caffeinated Clavier” Imagine being in Leipzig, in Zimmermann’s Coffeehouse, and watching Bach himself perform the “Coffee Cantata” while enjoying your favorite latte. PBO’s Music Director Designate, Richard Egarr, pairs this lighthearted vocal work with some of Bach’s grandest instrumental music. Joined by the extraordinary talents of soprano Nola Richardson, tenor James Reese, and bass-baritone Cody Quattlebaum, all rising stars out of Yale or Juilliard voice programs, Richard concocts another powerful brew of Bach’s brilliant music from the bench of the harpsichord. Program includes J.S. Bach, Harpsichord Concerto No. 7 in G minor, BWV 1058; Cantata Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht, BWV 211 (“Coffee Cantata”); Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052; and Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068. “Where Song Began” Music For Australia: A Concert Raising Funds for the Bushfire Crisis. Please join Bowerebird Collective (Simone Slattery, violin, and Anthony Albrecht, cello) for this special performance in aid of Australia’s endangered wildlife. Devastating fires, unprecedented in scale, have brought many species to the brink of extinction. Where Song Began is an ode to Australia, in particular its incredible songbirds and the landscapes they inhabit. 50-minutes long, this work features live music on baroque instruments spanning 300 years (from Schmelzer to Arvo Pärt), visual projections of birds and their landscapes, as well as an immersive natural soundscape. It tells the story of the evolution of songbirds, and how they shaped the world. “Where Song Began” has been performed over 60 times across Australia, as well as in New York and London. It has been hailed in the press as “…a work of art; a transfixing soundscape that embraces cultures and ages, the composed and the improvised, the indigenous and the stylised and which highlights the utterly unique birdsongs of Australia.”

“Music for Mercy” Jonathon Hampton directs the burgeoning early-music chamber chorus, Tactus SF, in a concert of Renaissance music begging mercy from the powers that be. English repertoire of Byrd, Farrant, Tallis, Wilbye, and neo-Renaissance composer Tanmoy Laskar. Also marvels by Spaniards Morales and Victoria, Franco-Flemish composers Lassus and Ockeghem, and the distinguished German, Hassler. Enjoy rarely performed choral favorites calling on Christ, the Virgin Mary, Love, and Death, lamenting sin and sorrow and pleading protection and preservation. Nick Jones, Tactus SF singer, music critic, and Early Music America board member, will give a pre-concert talk 30 minutes prior to the concert. The talk will be geared towards audiences of all ages.

Sinfonia Spirituosa is an exciting young baroque orchestra, newly formed in Sacramento by harpsichordist Lorna Peters. Its individual members are part of major orchestras across the country and Europe, and are quickly moving to the forefront of California’s virtuoso ensembles. Their program will feature concerti, suites and chamber works of Telemann, Purcell, Avison, Rameau, and others.
