Santa Cruz Baroque Festival: A Rainbow of American Musics
The Festival’s 50th Anniversary opens with a rainbow of historic musics from all the Americas. UCSC Chamber Singers opens by performing the first printed music to originate in the so-called ‘New World’, a 1631 hymn to the Virgin Mary in the Quechua language used by the ancient Incas, Hanacpachap Cuissicuinin, set to Spanish Renaissance style 4-part polyphony by the Franciscan Friar Juan Pérez Bocanegra. Colonial Sacred Harp singing in square format will bring us to the Northern hemisphere. Celebrating Black History month, the renowned prize-winning Endurance Gospel Quartet of Houston will make their triumphant return to our stage with their ‘archival’ a cappella brand of gospel.
Time: Saturday, February 4, 7:30: PST
Cost: $12-$30.
Venue: Holy Cross Church, 126 High St., Santa Cruz.
