George Frideric Handel, L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato. The utterly sublime oratorio set to words by one of England’s preeminent writers, John Milton, whose poems about the joyful man (“L’Allegro”) and contemplative man “Il Perseroso”) inspired Handel to new heights of humanist expression. Performed by instrumentalists and singers from the 2014 Academy, a lavish panoply of more than 30 arias and choruses is an exquisite musical delight.

Distinguished Artist Series: Mary Wilson, soprano. While in Cöthen, Bach had ample opportunity to study the published scores of Antonio Vivaldi. Continuing our “Bach Inspiration” theme, this program includes a concerto for four violins that Bach would later arrange for performance by four harpsichords, as well as a concerto for solo violin that he arranged for Harpsichord alone (both these are part of Vivaldi’s famous Op. 3 collection titled L’Estro armonico). Bach set only two works to Italian texts, and both of them will be part of this Festival. However, it is the music of one of Bach’s peers with which Ms Wilson has won the admiration of ABS audiences and (having been born in the same year as J.S. Bach, 1685) it is only right that we include a cantata by G.F. Handel. Written while still in Italy, Tra le fiamme warns that butterflies drawn to a flame will burn but a phoenix will rise again. Featured works include George Frideric Hande, Tra le fiamme; Johann Sebastian Bach, Concerto in D Major for Harpsichord Solo; after Vivaldi Violin Concerto in D Major; Johann Sebastian Bach, Non sa che sia dolor; and Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in B minor for 4 Violins and In furore iustissimae irae.
