The SFEMS All-Workshop Recorder Orchestra, conducted by Hanneke van Proosdij, will be followed by Faculty Recorder Consort, with Sarah Cantor, Frances Feldon, Clea Galhano, Rotem Gilbert and Hanneke van Proosdij, recorders.

Schola Magdalen of St. Mary Magdalen Church
“The First Apostle: Musical Portrayals of Mary Magdalen” Bay Area musicologist John Prescott will present a close listening of Renaissance and baroque works about Saint Mary Magdalen. Musical examples by 16th-century Spanish composer Francisco Guerrero and 17th-century Italian Benedictine nun Chiara Margarita Cozzolani will be performed live in the church by members of the Schola Magdalen, with musicians and music director, Andy Canepa. The program will last for two hours, and some of these same works will be heard again during the Sunday Masses, and in a mini-concert at noon on Sunday, July 22.

“Eicha for Tisha B’Av” An engaging Tisha B’Av evening of study, song, and meditation combined with a reading of the Book of Lamentations by candlelight. Ponder the ancient and contemporary themes of spiritual darkness and desolation with traditional chanting of Eicha interspersed with choral settings by Francisco Guerrero and Robert White. This event is co-sponsored by Congregation Ner Tamid and Congregation B’nai Emunah-San Francisco.
