“St. Hildegard von Bingen (1098–1179), her music and significance in our modern lives.” A Singing Study Group with Karen Clark. Second of three Saturday sessions focusing on the music, life, and writings of the great medieval mystic, composer, polymath, and saint. Session II: Readings from Hildegard’s Scivias (Know the Ways of God), the book wherein Hildegard first began to write of her visions at age 43. We will sing the antiphons learned in class one, and learn a new one. The Awareness Through Movement lesson will focus on elegant movement. Though not a requirement, it is recommended that you attend the entire series. Concludes August 2.

Valley of the Moon Music Festival
Eric Zivian, fortepiano, and Tanya Tomkins, cello, perform works of Beethoven and Mozart. With guest artists Joseph Maile, violin, and Derek Tam, fortepiano. This opening concert innaugurates an annual music festival that focuses on works by composers of the Classical and Romantic eras performed on period instruments. As Joshua Kosman (San Francisco Chronicle) writes, “If you have a narrow view of Beethoven as a scowling figure, shaking his fist in defiant rage at the heavens, that may be because you’ve been hearing his music on the wrong instruments.”
