SFEMS Medieval and Renaissance Workshop
“Love, Lust, and Music in the Middle Ages and Renaissance” A lecture by Adam Gilbert about the different types of love—fine love, lust, longing, and desire—and their influence on love songs, motets, and Masses from 1100–1600, addressing questions like: How do we fall in love at first sight, and why does it matter for a songwriter? What is fine amour, and what is amar, and what do they have to do with oregano, lily of the valley, and love songs? And why would someone write a Mass based on a filthy bawdy song?

SFEMS Medieval and Renaissance Workshop
“The Night’s Tale: A Tournament of Love” Anne Azéma and Shira Kammen present a musical narrative of combat and courtship in Medieval France (Jehan de Bretel, Metz, 1310). The performance captures a day’s celebrations. Daylight is the domain of men, who joust and fight in ritual encounters; when night falls, women converse in music and dance. Mutual desire aroused during the day culminates in the evening’s rites—aggressive and courtly, passionate and playful.
