Vallejo Choral Society — George Frideric Handel’s Israel in Egypt
Artistic Director Derek Tam will lead a unique series of online sessions that are part rehearsal and part music-appreciation course, featuring George Frideric Handel’s Israel in Egypt. This series is open to all music lovers everywhere—no singing experience required. On March 3, 2021, early music specialist Derek Tam will open the series with an original presentation of compositional and historical insights on Handel’s work. This first session is free and open to the public! Each Wednesday thereafter, Derek will lead unique, interactive sessions that integrate musicianship, vocal technique, sight-singing, virtual-choir production, and master-class critique. The program will culminate in a live-streamed finale concert on Saturday, May 22, 2021. With Handel’s great oratorio as the framework, VCS’s weekly online gatherings serve as a catalyst for individual growth as choral singers and musicians while offering enriching shared experiences within our choral community. Technical help with Zoom and virtual-choir recording is freely available.

Santa Cruz Baroque Festival— Northern Virtuosity
Ida Kühn Riegels, cello and recorder, is a young musician that generates great excitement with her performances in her Native Denmark, and around the world. She made her own cello with elements of Baroque era construction, along with design decisions to fit her own hands and her unique performance style. Prizing responsiveness and immediacy, she favors strings with less tension, and a bridge that allows the bow a little more room. The result is not only a unique sound, but a style of playing that allows for the closest match between her musical imagination and the sound she creates. Filmed in a small church on a small island in Denmark, the sound and video will be captured on site, beamed in high quality to our studio in California for sharing with our audience.
