Junior Bach Festival
61st annual Junior Bach Festival begins. The Junior Bach Festival is dedicated to touching young lives by promoting the study and performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Presented annually about the time of Bach’s birthday, March 21, the Festival features in concert some of the finest young musical talent in California, chosen by audition. Performances are scheduled the weekends of March 21–23 and March 28–30. Nine concerts (all different) at venues around the Bay Area feature young people performing works of Johann Sebastian Bach. New Esterházy Quartet
“Vienna in the 19th Century.” New Esterházy Quartet (Kati Kyme & Lisa Weiss, violins, Anthony Martin, viola, William Skeen, violoncello) perform a recent completion of Joseph Haydn’s unfinished Quartet in d minor, Op. 103 (1803, Bay Area premiere), Arnold Schoenberg’s Quartet in D Major (1897, Bay Area premiere on gut strings), and Franz Schubert’s Quartet in G major (1826).

“Jewish Music of the Baroque” Marin Baroque Chamber Choir and period instrument Orchestra perform works of Cáceres, Gallichi, Grossi, Lidarti, Rossi, and Saladin, on Both Jewish and non-Jewish composers in France, Italy, and the Netherlands wrote these pieces in Hebrew between 1600 and 1750 to celebrate very special occasions in Jewish life such as the dedication of a synagogue, a circumcision ceremony, and others. Esther/T’shuat Yisrael al y’dei Ester, by Cristiano Giuseppe Lidarti (1730–ca. 1793). SFRV’s Opera Early & Ancient series returns with this exciting US premiere of the story of Queen Esther and her rescue of the Jewish people from the murderous designs of the wicked Haman. Composed by Lidarti, an Austrian composer, born in Vienna of Italian descent, on the Hebrew libretto by Rabbi Jacob Saraval, written for the Jewish community in Amsterdam. We present this oratorio in semi-staged form with period chamber orchestra. With soloists soprano Rita Lilly as Queen Esther, tenor Seth Arnopole as King Ahasuerus, baritone Jefferson Packer as Haman, soprano Cheryl Cain as the Israelite Woman and tenor Corey Head as Mordecai.
