Join us for Early Music Open Mic Night in the East Bay, 4th Wednesday of every month. This is your opportunity to perform early music in a friendly cabaret style setting. Instrumentalists, singers, soloists, groups, students, youngsters, professionals — all are welcome! Please email [email protected] with the date you’d like to perform. Time slots will be up to 15 minutes, and there will be six time slots on each night. A harpsichord as well as a piano will be available on site. Food and drinks will be provided.

“Faire is the Heaven”. The Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser began one of his most cherished verses, “Faire is the heaven where happy soules have place in full enjoyment of felicitie.” Writers, painters, and composers would often evoke glimpses of the Paradise that could be found in the life beyond, an antidote to the troubled times that were experienced by so many in periods past. Heinrich Schütz’s serenely beautiful Musikalische Exequien draws upon texts from the Psalms, the Canticle of Simeon, Revelations, and the Book of Wisdom to illuminate the recognition of new life, including a dramatic effect of three spirits moving throughout the concert space. The exuberance of the vocal works by Bruhns and Weckmann, and Bach’s peaceful and uplifting Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit combine to make this a concert program of heavenly beauty.

In March and April, Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble offers two concerts of stunning sacred Baroque music, accompanied by the Jubilate Baroque Orchestra on period instruments. In anticipation of Holy Week, the culminating days of Lent observed by Christians throughout the ages, the concerts will feature Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s exquisite and beloved Stabat Mater, a 12-movement setting of the 13th century hymn to the Virgin Mary. Also on the program are movements from Johann Adolf Hasse’s Miserere, the motet, Salve Regina by Renaissance master, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and the Concerto Armonico #5 by Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer, originally attributed to Pergolesi. Whether you’re looking for a profound Holy Week experience or seek beautiful, historically accurate performances of stunning Baroque music, this will be a memorable musical occasion.
