“An Italian in Paris”, a concert honoring the 18th-century Italian dance sensation Barbara Campanini. Featuring music and fully costumed dances from Jean-Philippe Rameau’s opera ballet Dardanus and instrumental music of De la Barre, Monteclair and Marin Marais. This concert will conclude with an opportunity for the audience to learn a baroque dance, taught by SF Baroque Dancers director, Jennifer Meller. Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Nicholas McGegan, conductor ***CANCELLED***
This March, violinist Alana Youssefian returns for her third appearance with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra,
this time as soloist for Mendelssohn’s lushly virtuosic Violin Concerto in E minor, which she will perform on a
1924 Léon Victor Mougenot violin. The program, “Romantic Reflections,” also includes Cherubini’s Overture to
Démophoon and Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C major, “The Great,” all conducted by Music Director Nicholas McGegan. Nic, Alana, and the 48-piece orchestra will bring a keen knowledge of historically informed performance to these staples of the Romantic repertoire. Tackling arguably one of the greatest concertos in the repertoire, Alana will perform Mendelssohn’s exuberant violin concerto, while Nic delivers the culminating performance of the evening: Schubert’s majestic 9th symphony. This masterwork, originally called The Great C Major Symphony (Nic conducted The Little C Major Symphony, or Schubert’s 6th, last season), provides a luscious conclusion to Nic’s last glimpse at the Romantic era as PBO’s Music Director.

“The Musical Dialog.” Duo singers Rita Lilly and Ryan Matos with duo instrumentalists Marion Rubinstein and Laura Rubinstein-Salzedo explore the rich repertoire of musical dialog from Monteverdi’s miniature dramas to a scene from a Handel opera to Bach’s glorious Hunting Cantata. Aided and abetted by Jonathan Salzedo and Roy Whelden, the group recreates the rich textures of these timeless masterpieces. Albany Consort concerts get you close to the action, never any dull moments. You don’t have to sit still or even stay sitting; walking about and getting a bite to eat is also fine. Kids always welcome. Ticket prices are suggestions – no one turned away for lack of funds.

Barefoot Chamber Concerts
Barefoot’s March “A Marais Sampler” concert features the music of the great Marin Marais. The son of a humble shoemaker, Marais eventually became a composer and viol player who inspired a movie (Tous les Matins du Monde), wrote some of the first French operas, was appointed Ordinaire de la Chambre du Roi under Louis XIV, and wrote over 550 “pieces de viole” spread over five books published between 1686 and 1725, among other chamber pieces. The books of viol music form the mainstay of our program. Marais specified that his viol pieces were best performed with just a theorbo as the continuo instrument, and that is the way we will hear his music. Lynn Tetenbaum (viol) and John Lenti (theorbo), both well-known specialists in this music, need no introduction to Bay Area audiences. They will be playing music from all five of Marais’ books of Pieces de Viole, including the iconic “Labyrinthe,” (a musical journey through many curious keys, some hitherto unknown to viol players), as well as a variety of pieces from the other books, including John Lenti’s celebrated transcriptions of Marais for theorbo solo.There will, of course, be the usual Barefoot snax. Saint Mark’s Parish Hall will provide the perfect place for this concert. Don’t miss this!

Foothill Community Concert Series, South Bay Philharmonic
“Strauss Horn Concerto”. Foothill Community Concert Series is proud to be the home of the South Bay Philharmonic orchestra. This volunteer orchestra astounds audiences with an ever-growing repertoire of both modern and classical music. Directed by George Yefchak, the South Bay Philharmonic includes both professional and amateur musicians, giving young musicians a much-needed entry point into the world of orchestral music, and it’s a thrill to see them rise to the occasion. This second concert of the season includes: Kalinnikov: Tsar Boris Overture, Strauss: Horn Concerto No. 1 with Roger Romani, horn, and Beethoven: Symphony No. 4.
