Albany Consort
“From Chaos to the Sublime” The Albany Consort opens its 46th season with a program sure to delight and amaze you. Seven musicians take you “From Chaos to the Sublime”, painting the vivid musical landscape of Europe in turmoil. The program begins with Le Chaos by Jean-Féry Rebel, which begins with the most dissonant chord of any music from that time. It winds its way through the elegant and ingenious Henry Purcell (an In Nomine in the old manner and a Chacony following the newer practice) and the dramatic “phantasticus” style of Giovanni Legrenzi, ending with the poignantly sublime Passacaglia of Georg Muffat, the man who thought that if the musical styles of Europe could merge, then the raging wars would come to an end. The program’s centerpiece is Bach’s Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, a great experiment in keyboard virtuosity that paved the way for the concertos of Mozart, Beethoven and Rachmaninov. Featuring Jonathan Salzedo, harpsichord; Marion Rubinstein, recorder; Laura Rubinstein-Salzedo, violin; and friends.

“J415 A Baroque Bouquet” Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players jam with Juilliard415 in a delectable display of Bach, Vivaldi and Rameau. Get your jars ready to bottle up the HIPpest jam in the Bay Area this November, as The Juilliard School’s elite period instrument ensemble returns to San Francisco for another special side-by-side performance with the Philharmonia Baroque Chamber Players. Nicholas McGegan conducts this fantastic Baroque feast, spread with famous works by Bach, Vivaldi, and Rameau. Program includes J.S. Bach, Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C major, BWV 1066, and Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048; Antonio Vivaldi, Concerto in D major for Violin and Double Orchestra, RV 582; And Jean-Philippe Rameau, Orchestral Suite from Castor et Pollux.
