Join world-renowned violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock for a deep dive into the fascinating history and meaningful practice of Baroque style. Over the course of four one-hour sessions in October, we’ll explore Baroque playing from the technical nuts and bolts to the philosophical underpinnings of this essential style of music. Ideal for intermediate to advanced violin and viola players who are already exploring period instrument-playing as well as for those who don’t currently have historical equipment but wish to dig deeper into Baroque style.

“Between the Worlds — A Virtual Workshop with Shira Kammen” Celebrating Hallowe’en and Day of the Dead, Shira will lead us in magical music by Purcell, Machaut, Weelkes, and more, including laments for composers, and a spooky ballad or two. Come play any instrument you please and sing! For any instrument and singers! Workshop pitch will be A=440. Music is included in the workshop fee: PDFs of the music will be sent beforehand. “At Home with Eric Zivian: An Online Piano and Fortepiano Workshop.” Get a brand new view of the music you thought you knew: acclaimed fortepianist Eric Zivian will turn a trip down some well-worn paths into a journey of discovery. Learn how some fundamental assumptions of today’s piano playing – articulation, pedal, dynamics, and more – come from the characteristics and limitations of a modern concert grand piano. Is it time to question those assumptions? We’ll explore the history and evolution of pianos and piano performance. Who knows – it just might open the door to some new ideas for how to approach your favorite repertoire.

Santa Cruz Baroque Festival – Online Concert Hall
“Northern Worlds ~ Swedish Folk and Baroque, part 2”. In 1990, Olov became the first world champion of the nyckelharpa. He began to play the nyckelharpa in 1980 as a fourteen-year old, and was named a ‘riksspelman’ (master musician) in 1984. Olov has studied with the legendary Curt Tallroth and Erik Sahlström. He is regarded as one of Sweden’s most prominent nyckelharpa players, and is an inspiration for numerous young performers on the instrument. He is teaching regularly at the Eric Sahlström Institutet in Tobo and at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Apart from his association with Väsen, Olov also plays in a duo with Celtic harpist Catriona McKay. They have made two recordings together. He has also recorded with groups such as Kronos Quartet, the Nyckelharpa Orchestra, as well as several solo projects. In 2013 he was rewarded with the Zorn medal in gold. The finest award within Swedish traditional music.

“Bach and the Dance”
Lecture by Nicholas McGegan OBE, Music Director Laureate
Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale. Much of Bach’s music is based on the rhythms of the court dances
of his day, not just in the Suites and Partitas with named dance movements but also, less obviously, in the Cantatas and Passions. This talk aims to show how deep this vein of the dance runs in his music. In addition, what characters each type of dance had for musicians of the Baroque period.
