Santa Cruz Baroque Festival – Online Concert Hall
“Music of O’Carolan: Multi-Instrumentalist Shelley Phillips”. On A Summer Evening, this 13th of June, Harpist Shelly Phillips joined the Baroque Festival at Geekhaven, to play a concert for broadcast on the internet. Birds sang along as Shelley played her harp, oboe d’amore, oboe da caccia, and antique flute on this deck in the Aptos Hills. It was a delightful concert, worth revisiting now as we head into fall. Turlough O’Carolan (1670 – 1738) was a Celtic harpist and is considered the national composer of Ireland. Blinded by smallpox as a teenager, he spent his life traveling around Ireland performing and composing. Carolan composed instrumental harp music as well as songs in the Irish language. In his musical style, he blended baroque music of the European continent with traditional Irish music.
