“The Kingdoms of Castile” Directed by world-renowned guitarist and lutenist Richard Savino, El Mundo will take listeners on a musical journey from Castilian courts and cathedrals to Spanish-influenced Italian cities like Naples and on to the viceroyalties of Peru, Mexico, and Guatemala, where classical tradition blended with indigenous dances to create a unique Hispanic style that still exists today. “Kingdoms of Castile” will featuring works from El Mundo’s GRAMMY-nominated disc of the same name as well as from their new recording of Music from Guatemala City. Performers include Jennifer Kampani and Nell Snaidas, sopranos; Paul Shipper, bass, guitar & percussion; Adam LaMotte and Lisa Grodin, violins; William Skeen, cello; Corey Jamason, harpsichord; and Richard Savino, guitar & theorbo. “Glory and Power: Divine and Earthly Kings.” G.F. Handel: Coronation Anthems The King Shall Rejoice, HWV 260; and Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened, HWV 259; and J.S. Bach: Cantata BWV 21, Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis. Handel’s sparkling Coronation Anthems were written for the crowning of King George II in Westminster Abbey in 1727 and have been played at every British coronation since. With their glittering, triumphant fanfares, these jubilant pieces celebrate the pomp, ceremony, and grandeur of this royal event. By contrast, Cantata 21 (“I was much afflicted”) explores the profound transformation of the lost soul from darkness and alienation through redemption to the ultimate light of salvation. Described by John Eliot Gardiner as “one of the most extraordinary and inspired of Bach’s vocal works,” the composer illustrates the glory of the divine kingdom by unleashing trumpets and drums in a brilliant and celebratory final chorus. With soloists Jennifer Paulino, soprano; Daniel Hutchings, tenor; Nikolas Nackley, baritone; and the Jubilate Baroque Orchestra.
