Santa Cruz Baroque Festival – Online Concert Hall
“Roots of Bach And Telemann (pt. 1)-Virtu Ensemble”. This afternoon’s program is our ensemble’s effort to illustrate not only how Bach was certainly looking back to older composers and styles, such as Corelli, but how he was certainly looking forward—to his colleagues and contemporaries for inspiration. One such composer was Georg Philipp Telemann, colleague and close friend. Both steeped deeply in the Lutheran tradition, they shared prolific inspiration to the Sunday sermons and worked in similar circles during their lives, even auditioning for the same church positions! Bach’s son, Carl Phillip, was named in honor of his godfather Georg Philipp Telemann, and later would step in as his successor in Hamburg.
