Early Music America has just announced the recipients of its annual awards for 2014. Winners of this year’s Thomas Binkley Award for outstanding achievements in scholarship and performance are Rotem and Adam Gilbert. The Gilberts have enriched the Bay Area’s early music community in countless ways. Both have been beloved members of our faculty for the SFEMS Summer Workshops for many years. This summer, Adam directs our Medieval and Renaissance Workshop, and Rotem co-directs our Recorder Workshop. Their acclaimed ensemble, Ciaramella, also has appeared on the SFEMS concert series and this June makes its Berkeley Festival debut, opening the Festival on Sunday, June 1, with a rousing program of Alta Capella music from the Burgundian Renaissance.

Margriet Tindemans is the well-deserved recipient of the this year’s Laurette Goldberg Early Music Outreach Award for her achievements in educational and outreach projects. Margriet also has both appeared on the SFEMS concert series and taught at our Medieval/Renaissance Workshops. We will have the chance to see and hear her again on Monday, June 2, , in the Berkeley Festival debut of a new ensemble, Cantainbanchi, performing 13th- and 14th-century music from Spain, France, and Italy.

Laurette Goldberg, after whom this award is named, was not only a distinguished harpsichordist and teacher but the founder of many Bay Area institutions now vital pillars of our community, including a forerunner of the SFEMS Summer Workshops, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, and MusicSources. She was also a founding member of SFEMS and a former Vice President of our board of directors.

Jeanne Lamon, director of Toronto’s distinguished Tafelmusik baroque orchestra since 1981, will receive the Howard Mayer Brown Award for lifetime achievement in the field of early music.

The recipients will be honored on Friday, June 6 at 3:30 p.m. at EMA’s Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony at the Berkeley Festival. Please join us.
