Winter Collegium to Explore Concerted Vocal Works from Italy, Holland, Germany, and England

This year’s collegium explores the great compositional changes that took occurred in concerted vocal music during the 17th and early 18th centuries. The first half of the day is comprised of works by Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli and Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck; the second half will be devoted to works by composers such as George Frideric Handel, J.S. Bach, and Henry Purcell.
Each half-day session will will run about two and a half hours. Information about compositional approaches and style will be woven into the rehearsal format, with the primary focus being on playing and singing. All pieces will include parts for voices and instruments.
Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with the workshop itself running from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and resuming after a one-hour lunch break for a second session from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m. Tuition is $50 for SFEMS members, $65 for non-members. Proceeds go to support the SFEMS Summer Baroque Workshop.
Come have fun working with a specialist and sackbut player of this beautiful repertoire. Linda Pearse teaches sackbut at Indiana University Bloomington, brass instruments and pedagogy at Mount Allison University (Canada), and directs the early music ensemble ¡Sacabuche! Pearse also serves as artistic director of the SFEMS Summer Baroque Workshop, held this year June 19–26, 2016 at the Holy Names University in Oakland.
