A Message from Tish Berlin
We’re looking forward to another wonderful week at the Music Discovery Workshop (MDW) this June!
We’ll be back at the School of the Madeleine in North Berkeley, with our gifted and wonderfully supportive faculty. Come join Carla Moore, violin/viola; Vida Bateau, recorder; Farley Pearce, cello/viola da gamba; Yuko Tanaka, harpsichord; Shulamit Kleinerman, theater project/dance; Amy Luper, crafts, and me, for a week of music, dance, crafts, and story telling.
This summer, our theater project will explore the different ways that people told stories in the Middle Ages. From 12th-century French poet Marie de France comes the tale of Bisclavret, a knight turned into a wolf, who is trying desperately to explain the mistake to the king and queen. From Medieval Spain come tales of traveling pilgrims who stay up all night rowdily dancing and singing in the city of Montserrat—to the dismay of the local monks, who must figure out how to keep them entertained.
Join us and discover how people of the Middle Ages entertained themselves with centuries-old song, dance, poetry, and drama.
The MDW theater project will see each afternoon class enacting its own story from the Middle Ages, and conclude with a set of three performances Friday evening. Additionally, our daily schedule will include instruction in recorder, violin, viola, cello, viola da gamba, and harpsichord, dance and crafts, and outdoor games. After-camp care is available by prior arrangement with the director.
