J.S. Bach: Mass for Advent

For 20 years, Warren Stewart and Magnificat have pioneered the performance of great sacred works in their original, musical-liturgical context. Their recreations of splendid, baroque Christmas services have become a highlight of the Bay Area’s holiday season. This year, Magnificat’s time machine takes audiences to St. Thomas of Leipzig on the first Sunday of Advent in the year 1735, for a celebratory Lutheran mass reconstructed from Kapellmeister J.S. Bach’s own handwritten notes on his manuscript of Canata 62.

The program will include congregational chorales, which the audience will be encouraged to sing. Download the music and text!
