The Marin Headlands Workshop is coming up soon. This year’s session runs from Friday through Sunday, May 13–15. In many ways the Bay Area’s premier workshop, this much anticipated event was founded many years ago by the Marin Recorder Society (no longer in existence) and now is sponsored each year by the East Bay Chapter of the American Recorder Society (EBRS). The workshop offers intermediate to advanced recorder players the chance to spend all or part of a late spring weekend—often touted as having of the Bay Area’s most agreeable weather—in a beautiful setting, playing, singing, and hanging out with a convivial group of fellow musicians. This year’s workshop once again will be held at the YMCA Point Bonita Conference Center in the Marin Headlands of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, north of San Francsico. Faculty will include Adam Gilbert, Frances Feldon, Peter Maund, Judith Linsenberg, Greta Haug-Hryciw, Michelle Levy, Rebecca Molinari, and Glen Shannon.
The weekend begins with Madrigals and Mayhem, Friday night’s session directed by Glen Shannon, which will include a sampling of new and old music, including by Glen himself. Course offerings over the weekend will be devoted to the music of Johannes Ciconia, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Henry VIII, J.S. Bach, and more. The workshop concludes Sunday morning with Peter Maund’s session on World Music and Percussion. There will be plenty of time, as well as spare rooms, for jamming and practicing.
Soft reeds and viols are welcome in most classes. For full information and to register, visit EBRS’s website and download the brochure. Full and partial weekend attendance are possible; however registration cannot be guaranteed after May 1 and will depend on available space.
