The indefatigable Letitia Berlin continues to offer new classes for recorder players as well as other early instrumentalists and singers. She will be offering three new classes in March and April at her home in Albany, as well as new, group classes at the Albany Adult School.
The first class, “Sightreading Smorgasbord for the Intermediate Recorder Player,” provides an opportunity to improve your ability to sight read by doing it! We’ll play through a variety of pieces, from easy to moderately difficult, geared toward the people who attend each class. You’ll get lots of tips and tricks to keep going when you lose your place, and have fun in the process. This class is for intermediate recorder players. The class runs from 1:45–3:00 p.m., Tuesdays, March, 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, April 14, and requires a minimum enrollment of 4 to a maximum of 7 participants.
The second class, “Music in the Spanish Courts from the late 15th to the 16th Century, Part II” for voices and instruments, features villancicos, motets, and mass movements by late 15th- and 16th-century Spanish and Franco-Flemish composers. This period in Spanish history produced an abundance of ravishingly beautiful music by composers including Juan del Encina, Francisco Peñalosa, Pedro de Escobar, Josquin des Prez, Pierre de La Rue, and Cristobal de Morales, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and more. The class runs from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., Wednesdays, March 11, 18, 25, April 1, 8, 15, and also requires a minimum enrollment of 4 to a maximum of 7.
The third class, “Upper Intermediate Recorder Ensemble,” will be arranged according to the schedules of students. Day and time will be determined by enrollment, which has a maximum of 6.
These classes will take place at Tish’s home in Albany. Students must be able to navigate an uneven path on a hill. Pitch for all classes is A=440. The cost for each class is $150 for the full session of 6 meetings or $30 per class if paying weekly. For more information or to register, please email Tish at [email protected], or leave a message at 510-882-1169.
Finally, Tish will be teaching two weekly, large group class at the Albany Adult School. One is for low intermediate players (students must be able to play at least one size and know fingerings for an octave and a half including two sharps/flats and be familiar with common time signatures), the other for high intermediate players (students must know both C and F fingerings, be able to carry line alone and have substantial previous ensemble experience to participate in this class. Student must already play SATB or be willing to learn bass). The spring session begins March 24 and goes to May 26, 2020.
