Bay Area dance enthusiasts young and old should be aware of two workshops coming up Friday and Saturday, January 25 and 26.
On Friday evening, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the University of California Berkeley Baroque Ensemble, and the New York Baroque Dance Company co-present a free baroque dance and music workshop for students and the community. The workshop runs from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and will be held in UC Berkeley’s Hertz Hall. Attendees will have the chance to dance to live French Baroque music from Rameau’s Le Temple de la Gloire, performed by members of PBO playing side-by-side with the University Baroque Ensemble directed by Christine Brandes. The brilliant New York Baroque Dance Company Founder and Co-Director Catherine Turocy will lead the exhilarating workshop onstage!
No prior dance experience is necessary. It’s okay to sign up to dance or to observe. Please click HERE to reserve your seat on a first come, first served basis. Please be advised that Turocy’s workshop at UC Berkeley two years ago was filled within 24 hours.
The following morning Catherine Turocy returns to lead The Junior Bach Festival’s Annual Workshop, “Running Bach—The Quick Dances of the Bourée and Gigue.” New York Baroque Dance Company’s Artistic Director Catherine Turocy and musicians from Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra will guide participants in an active exploration of Bach’s dances. No previous dance experience is necessary, and it will be okay just to watch and listen. The Junior Bach Festival’s Annual Workshop explores an aspect of Bach’s music; working knowledge of baroque dance is essential to musical appreciation.
The workshop will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and will take place at the Crowden Music Center, 1475 Rose Street, (close to North Berkeley Bart). Students may attend free of charge. Suggested Donation is $10 for adults. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
