This week’s SFEMS Baroque Workshop at Sonoma State University features several events open to the public. The real treat will be the Workshop Faculty Concert, “Water – Music’s Elixir,” taking place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, at Schroeder Hall, Green Music Center, Sonoma State University. Performers include Rita Lilly (soprano), Aaron Sheehan (tenor), Bruce Dickey (cornetto), Linda Pearse (bass sackbut), Maximilien Brisson (sackbut), Clea Galhano (recorder), Anna Marsh (bassoon), Sand Dalton (oboe), Sandra Miller (traverso), David Wilson (Baroque violin), William Skeen (cello), Nigel North (theorbo), and Peter Sykes (organ & harpsichord). The program offers a whirlwind tour of music by composers from John Dowland and Giovanni Gabrieli to George Frederic Handel and Georg Philipp Telemann. The internationally-renowned faculty assure this one-of-a-kind concert is not to be missed! Admission is by a suggested donation of $25.
The final student concerts of the week are also open to the public. On Friday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m., the Participant Large Ensembles Project Concert will take place in IVES 101, on the Sonoma State University campus. And on Saturday, June 24, the Participant Chamber Ensembles Concert will be held, also in IVES 101, starting at 9:30 a.m. In both concerts, Baroque Workshop participants will perform music learned during their week at the workshop. These concerts are free of charge.
The final concert and theater production of this year’s SFEMS Music Discovery Workshop and Youth Collegium are also free and open to the public. The performances take place Friday, June 23, at 6:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall of St. Mary Magdalen Church, 2005 Berryman St., Berkeley. The presentations include workshop-wide singing, Vocal Collegium, Instrumental Collegium, younger children’s ensembles, and period dances, followed by a theater production, featuring creations from the arts & crafts class. All of this will be focused on the theme of Wolfie and Nannerl’s Grand Tour of Europe. New to MDW&YC this year, we will also have a presentation Introduction to Viols class during the concert. Everybody at the workshop will have an Introduction to Viols class in the afternoon with Farley Pearce and David Sego. We are very grateful to Cindi Olwell with the Viola da Gamba Society, Pacifica Chapter for making this happen by loaning us their instruments from their rental program. Viola da Gamba Society Pacifica Chapter and VdGS America are working together to underwrite a portion of the new Introduction to Viols program. You are all invited to join us!
