“Foreign Affairs: Characters of the Baroque” The esteemed Berlin-based early music ensemble returns with an eclectic and exuberant program of Baroque works showcasing the musicians’ finesse at navigating French, German, English, and Italian repertoire. “The orchestra’s level of virtuosity, ensemble and interpretive cohesion made the seventeen musicians seem to breathe and think as one” (The Washington Post). Barefoot All-Stars
“Music Before the Puritans” The Barefoot All-Stars have been entertaining Bay Area audiences since their first appearance at the Berkeley Festival Fringe in 2012. In this program, Barefoot’s core string band will present their unique take on one of the most fascinating and varied repertoires known to Early Music: Elizabethan and Jacobean consort music. Intricate fantasies and In nomines by Gibbons, Coprario, Byrd and others will be interspersed with lavishly decorated dances by Dowland, Holborne and more. Featured in this program will be the extraordinary and rarely-heard fantasies for “Great Dooble Bass” by Orlando Gibbons and Giovanni Coprario. Featuring Shira Kammen, Peter Hallifax, Julie Jeffrey, David Morris and Lynn Tetenbaum, viols, violin, and the great dooble bass. A co-presentation of the San Francisco Early Music Society and the California Jazz Conservatory.

Second Sundays Concert Series
“Remembered Migrations” Varja Voices, Karen Clark, Director, and Shira Kammen, early strings, have teamed up for a unique performance treating the inner lives of women from as far flung eras and places as medieval France, 20th-century Appalachia, 12th century China, and contemporary works inspired by those voices and more. The styles are similarly diverse, from the motets and chansons to familiar folk to vocal abstractions. Several of the works are premiers by composers Theresa Wong and also Shira Kammen, who joins the ensemble for this performance. Woven throughout is a journey into the alchemy of the human spirit.
